An official in the cultural section of the Embassy of the Islamic State of Afghanistan in Washington, DC, stated in a telephone interview that the Farsi calendar is used in Afghanistan and Iran (10 Feb. 1995). This information was corroborated in telephone interviews by a professor at the Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University in Montréal and an official at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Ottawa (10 Feb. 1995). The official at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran added the Farsi calendar may also be used in Tajikistan (10 Feb. 1995). The DIRB is unable to corroborate at the present time whether or not the Republic of Tajikistan uses the Farsi calendar.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
