Information on the courses covered at the Omdurman University in a four-year degree in Arabic literature and/or linguistics, on whether students are annually provided with transcripts of their marks, and on whether library and university registration cards are issued to students could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB.
However, in a 24 January 1996 telephone interview, a research analyst at Human Rights Watch (HRW) in New York provided the following information with regard to the recruitment of students for service in the military and/or People's Defense Force (PDF).
Every man over 18 years must register for military service, although students are eligible to defer their service until graduation. In addition all students, both male and female, are required to undertake a maximum of 45 days training in the PDF. These students must complete PDF training before university and must have proof of completion of PDF training one day prior to entering university. In some areas in Sudan, students can only get their university application forms from the PDF.
An Official at the Embassy of the Republic of Sudan stated during a 24 January 1996 interview that students must complete PDF service before being allowed to enter university.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
