As per our telephone conversation, please refer to the
documents attached to the Response to Information Request No.
GHA9439. One of the attachments reports that the oil refinery in
Tema is known as GHAIP after its acronym for Ghana Italian Petrol
Refinery Company (FBIS-AFR-90-196 10 Oct. 1990, 24). Another
attachment reports that its workers' complaints had been handled
by the General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union
(West Africa 29 Oct. 1990). The same source states that the
GHAIP union had agreed to meet with the Chief Executive of GHAIP
following an initiative of Ghanaian Trade union Congress (TUC)
team that held meetings with a government team (Ibid.).
However, the sources currently available to the IRBDC do not
indicate the exact relationship between the GHAIP union, the
General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union and the TUC.
For more details on the refinery's operations and problems
related to the October 1990 unrest, please refer to the Response
to Information Request No. GHA9439.
