No information on Colonel Kemi (Olukemi) Peters subsequent to that in NGA30594.E of 27 November 1998 could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. However, a 4 March 1999 report from P.M. News indicates that those persons convicted in the alleged coup plots of 1995 and 1997 had been released by the government. Those convicted for participation in the 1995 alleged coup had been "retired with their last ranks when they were arrested," while those convicted for participation in the 1997 alleged coup plot "had been dismissed from the service and thus have no right whatsoever to bear their former ranks" (ibid., 9 Mar. 1999). Colonel Peters is not among those cited in the report.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
