According to a representative of the embassy of Turkey in Ottawa, military service is compulsory for all Turkish citizens (19 Nov. 1993). The 1987 law on alternative military service applies to people judged unfit by the army medical examiners, to Turkish students abroad who will perform their service when their studies are finished, and to the Kurdish population (Ibid.).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
