A report of escape from prison appears in an article in the West Africa magazine of 8-14 October 1990. According to the article, Lieutenant Colonel Antony Nyam, reportedly one of the leaders of the attempted coup of 22 April 1990 had escaped from prison with the aid of "some influential Nigerians." The article does not specify, however, whether the escape was made from Kirikiri prison.
