According to an AFP report, at least one Awami League (AL) supporter was shot dead in Dhaka and "some 50 injured" by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) supporters during an AL-sponsored nationwide strike (10 Feb. 1993). Another report provides information on an attempt on the life of AL Leader Sheikh Hasina for which the "fundamentalist" Jammatt-i-Islami and the BNP were blamed (All India Radio Network 25 Jan. 1993).
While not referring to the treatment of AL supporters by BNP supporters, the attached August 1993 AFP report, which provides information on a bomb attack on a pro-AL newspaper office, might be useful.
Information on state protection for AL supporters is currently unavailable to the DIRB.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
