According to Encyclopedia of the Third World, "Sudan provides free, universal and compulsory education for six years, from seven to 13" (1992, 1810). This source also states that "only 52% of children in the seven-to-12 age group attend primary school ..." (ibid.).

According to Sudan: A Country Study, the Nimeiri-led government proposed a broad reorganization of the educational system after it seized power in 1969 "which would eventually make the new six-year elementary education program compulsory and would pay much more attention to technical and vocational education at all levels" (1992, 111). However, the same source also indicates that "the hope for universal and compulsory education had not been realized by the early 1980s ..." (ibid.). For further information on the Sudanese education system, please consult the attached excerpts from Sudan: A Country Study.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
