According to the attached article from the Trinidad Guardian of 14 July 1992, eleven months after the passage of the Domestic Violence Act, 1,007 cases had been filed; of these, 824 cases had been resolved while 183 were still pending. The article quotes the Chief Magistrate as saying "the initial trickles of applications made were rapidly and phenomenally converted into brawling torrents."
An officer with the magistrates' court in Port of Spain stated during a seminar on family law held in St. Ann's on 14 March 1992 that there were approximately eight to ten new applications for protection orders each day, and some days as many as fourteen (Thomas-Felix 14 Mar. 1992, 3).
Information on whether violators of protection orders are being prosecuted in the courts could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB.
Additional and/or corroborative information on the requested subject could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB.
