According to a United Nations document, Conscientious Objection to Military Service, there is no compulsory military service in Gambia (1985, E/CN.4/Sub.2/1983/30/Rev.1). Reuters reports that, in 1991, the armed forces consisted of 800 men and that Colonel Aboubakar Dada, a Nigerian, was appointed commander of the Gambian army (5 Aug. 1991).
Additional and/or corroborative information on the above subject could not be found among the sources currently available to the IRBDC in Ottawa.
