The coordinator of a Sri Lankan field project at McMaster University in Hamilton states that Kandy has a mixed population (1 Sept. 1994). While most of the population are Sinhalese, there is also an Indian Tamil (plantation Tamil) community in Kandy (ibid.). The coordinator does not know the numerical strength of this Tamil community.
According to a representative of INFORM, an NGO in Colombo, Kandy is a major Buddhist centre whose population is mainly Sinhalese (1 Sept. 1992). The representative adds that 10 to 15 per cent of its population are Indian Tamil (plantation Tamil) workers.
Neither of the above-mentioned sources is aware of the existence of a community of Sri Lankan Tamils in Kandy.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
