According a report in the African Research Bulletin of 1-30 April 1992, the government announced that "it has arrested a group of soldiers and retired army officers on April 15th for planning to overthrow the government of Lieutenant General Omar al-Bashir" (10555A). According to The Guardian,
This round of arrests marks the fourth time in three years that the government of Sudan has announced a coup plot after detaining the coup plotters. Last August it executed 28 army officers for attempting a coup ... earlier this month, according to Amnesty International, the wives of 14 of those officers executed in August were arrested after a protest in Khartoum
(18 Apr. 1992).
According to a BBC Summary report, the president decreed the reduction of sentences for convicted coup plotters (29 July 1992). Information on the persons involved in the coup not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylm.
