2) Following the violent demonstration of May 1989 against the adjustment program imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Nigerian police forces proceeded to arrest around 1,500 people (Smith, Libération, 29 May 1989.; «Nigéria», Libération, 3-4 June 1989.).

Specific information on the enforcement of decrees 21 and 22 during the student unrest and on the penalties incurred thereby is currently unavailable to the IRBDC in Ottawa.
