Le 6 juin 1989, environ 3 000 étudiants et travailleurs bloquaient toujours les ponts de Guangzhou en signe de protestation contre la répression du 4 juin à la Place Tienanmen [ «Unrest Grows Across China, Provincial Cities Fear Army Attack» Reuters, 6 juin 1989, PM Cycle.]. Un autre article indique que «plusieurs milliers» de protestataires se sont amassés dans la ville de Guangzhou aux lendemains du massacre de Tienanmen [ «Envoys' Compound Raked by China Soldiers' Gunfire; Provinces Feel Heat of Turmoil» Los Angeles Times, 7 juin 1989, p.1.].
