The National Liberal Party (NLP), also referred to as the Liberal Party in some reports, was first founded in 1876 and was forcibly disbanded in 1948 (RFE 16 Feb. 1990, 29). In December 1989, after the fall of the Ceausescu government, the NLP held a founding conference (Ibid.). The NLP participated in the 1990 national elections, winning nine seats in the Senate and twenty-nine seats in the Assembly of Deputies (RFE 6 July 1990, 25). However, following the elections, divisions within the party resulted in the formation of another party, the National Liberal Party-Youth Wing, separate from the NLP (RFE 7 Sept. 1990, 27-28). According to a report by Rompres, the National Liberal Party-Youth Wing is now known as the Liberal Party (FBIS-EEU-91-212 1 Nov. 1991, 15).
Please find attached the Response to Information Request ROM8450 and several recent articles from the Foreign Broadcast Information Service and Radio Free Europe. These reports provide details on the NLP and the NLP-Youth Wing, their activities and their relations with government from 1990 to October 1991. The Indexed Media Review, available at your Regional Documentation Centre, includes a few additional articles on this topic.
There is no further information currently available to the IRBDC on this topic.
