1) The Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) was the governing party up to mid-1986. In presidential elections held in May 1986, the PRD lost power to the opposition Revolutionary Social Christian Party (PRSC). [A Chronology of Developments in the Dominican Republic since 1965, (Refugee Status Advisory Committee, Ottawa: 1986.) p.18] After the elections, the former President Jorge Blanco and several of his associates were charged and convicted on corruption charges. ["Dominican Ex-Leader Convicted", The New York Times, Monday November 28, 1988.] According to Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 1988 (U.S. Department of State, Washington, D.C.: 1989, p.539) "There have been accusations that political factors are behind the prosecution of members of the previous administration on a variety of corruption charges."
No further corroborating information was found among the sources available at present to the IRBDC.
