The following information was provided during a 16 October 1996 telephone interview with the representative of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (DPIK) in New York.
The source stated that the 64th Infantry Division of Urmiyeh and the Brigade of Salmas were involved in human rights violations against Kurdish civilians between 1983 and 1988. The units killed Kurdish civilians, destroyed Kurdish villages and burned peasants' fields during their military operations in the Kurdish region of Iran. The commanding officer of the 64th Infantry Division of Urmiyeh was General Zahirnajad.
