1) From 1983 to 1986, Badruddoza Chowdhury was secretary-general of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Dal (Bangladesh Nationalist Party - BNP). After his election as vice-chairman of the party in 1987, Chowdhuray was replaced by A. K. M. Obaidur Rahman (Europa 1983-1988, Ahmed, 2 December 1987). A year and a half later, in July 1988, Rahman left the party and was replaced by Abdus Salam Talukdar (Europa, 1989). According to the latest reports, Talukdar is still secretary-general of the BNP (Europa, 1990; BBC, 10 January 1991).
2) According to Chronology of Developments in Bangladesh Since Independence, prepared by The Refugee Stauts Advisory Committee (RSAC) in July 1985, 1, 333 people were arrested and detained in connection with a number of demonstrations in February 1983 (RSAC, July 1985).
The United Press International news service reported that the Bangladeshi government closed Dhaka University, imposed a curfew and censored the press on 15 February 1983, after two days of student violence which left three people dead and 200 wounded (Mohiuddin, 15 February 1983). Both reports indicate the students were protesting against the government education policy (RSAC, July 1985; Mohiuddin, 15 February 1983).
