Information from Nawa-i-Waqt, Agahz and Awam regarding a fire in Impress (Empress) Market in south Karachi in March or April 1997 could not be obtained by the Research Directorate.
According to Europa, Nawa-i-Waqt (Voice of the Time) was founded in 1940 and with Daily Jang, Imroze, Jasarat and Mashriq, is "among the most influential" Urdu newspapers (1997, 2552). Nawa-i-Waqt is a popular "principal daily" published in English and Urdu in Lahore with editions in Karachi, Islamabad and Multan, having a combined circulation of 400,000 (ibid., 2552-53.). According to Benn's Media World 1996, Nawa-i-Waqt is an Urdu daily published in Lahore (1996, 458).
According to Europa, Aghaz was founded in 1963, is a principal Urdu evening daily published in Karachi and has a circulation of 42,700 (1997, 2552). Benn's Media World 1996 corroborates this information, stating that it is an Urdu daily published in Karachi (1996, 458).
According to Benn's Media World 1996, Awam is an Urdu daily published in Faisalabad (1996, 457). Europa also lists a principal daily Urdu evening paper by the name of the Daily Awam, which was founded in 1994 and is published in Karachi (1997, 2552).
