A 1990 report by Middle East Watch entitled Human Rights in Syria indicated that the Hama uprising and subsequent repression lasted from 2 February to 5 March 1982 (26). The report indicated that Hama was one of the centres of the opposition to the régime and identifies the beginning of the repression against the city to an ambush led by Islamic guerrillas against an army checkpoint on 21 April 1981which was followed by sporadic fighting (25).
