Information further to that provided in previous Responses could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB. The documents attached to Response to Information Request SLV13641 of 5 April 1993 were provided by two of the most prominent human rights organizations in El Salvador, the Tutela Legal of the Archbishop's office and the Human Rights Centre of the Central American University at San Salvador (also known as the Jesuit University), in response to DIRB questions on the penalties imposed on persons who deserted from military service before and after the peace accords went into effect.

Other human rights organizations, including Americas Watch and El Rescate Human Rights Department, were contacted by the DIRB with regard to the previous information requests mentioned in this Response, but no additional information could be obtained.

Further information on penalties for desertion and evasion of military service can be found in Responses to Information Requests SLV17173.E of 22 April 1994, SLV17944.E of 4 August 1994 and SLV18224.E of 16 August 1994.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
