India
According to the Encyclopedia of the Third World,
English in India was accorded the status of an "associate
official language" in the Constitution but is in practice the
principal medium of communication among the educated and the
medium of instruction in secondary schools and universities
(Kurian 1987, 872).
According to a Tamil interpreter originally from Tamil Nadu,
Tamil is the language of instruction in public schools, but
English is the language of instruction in many private schools
(Interpreter 9 May 1991).
