A representative of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Ottawa provided the following information on the above subjects during a telephone interview on 10 September 1992.
After the arrest of a person who is accused of a crime, the accused receives an initial hearing during which, depending on the nature of the crime, bail may be set. The possibility of setting bail depends on the discretion of the judge during the first hearing. Bail may be paid in funds or in kind such as "property put up as collateral." Bail may also be set for cases which involve serious charges such as espionage.
Additional information on the above subjects is currently unavailable to the IRBDC.
