Please note that the Associated Press article of 18 February 1996 reports that the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI - Instituitional Revolutionary Party) was elected in the 1993 gubernatorial elections for Quintana Roo and United Press International of 22 February 1993 refers to the state as being a bastion of the PRI. The Associated Press of 18 February 1996 reports Governor Villanueva Madrid having made a statement to the press pertaining to the results the 17 February 1996 state elections.
