The following information was obtained in a telephone interview with an official at the Nigerian Universities Office in Washington, DC on 9 February 1996.
According to the official, high school students who have completed their studies must write the West Africa School Certificate examination in order to receive a high school leaving certificate. The examination covers the core subjects of study as well as the student's area of concentration, such as social sciences or sciences for example.
Common entrance is the name given the examination students take upon completion of their primary education. According to the official, this examination is analogous to a high school entrance placement exam.
The official stated that general entrance requirements to Nigerian universities require registered high school students to successfully pass the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board exam. Alternatively, the General Certificate Exam may be written by students not registered in a high school program, or by students who have done poorly on the West Africa School Certificate examination. For specific admission requirements for the economics program at the University of Benin, please consult the attachment.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
