According to an official at the Embassy of Yugoslavia in Ottawa, it is possible for a foreign national who is married to a citizen of Yugoslavia to gain Yugoslav citizenship, but it is not automatically granted. After living together with the Yugoslav citizen in Yugoslavia for a period of three to four years, the foreign national may apply for citizenship. The official stated that this has been the procedure for a long time (Interview, 21 February 1991).

A copy of the Citizenship Act of Yugoslavia is not currently available to the Documentation Centre.
