According to a representative of the Iranian Community Association of Toronto, schools that specialize in teaching contemporary dance would not be allowed to operate legally in Tehran (16 Feb. 1994).
However, according to a representative of the Lawyer's Committee for Human Rights in New York, contemporary and aerobic dance clubs operate in Tehran, particularly in the northern part of the city (17 Feb. 1994). The source added that these clubs are private and segregated by sex (ibid.).
The source also stated that Iran maintains a national dance company which performs "non-traditional" ballet. He added that there has recently been a revival of interest in classical Iranian music and that classical Iranian music and dance are currently being re-interpreted and "modernized" (ibid.). The source stated that Tehran hosts a number of public theatres and that "contemporary" interpretations of traditional Iranian folk-tales featuring male and female dancers have recently been broadcast to Western countries (ibid.).
Additional and/or corroborative information on the requested subject could not be found among the sources currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
