According to recent information provided by Xinhua General Overseas News Service, the government of Sri Lanka has not yet removed the economic blockade on the Jaffna Peninsula (9 Jan. 1993). However, the same source indicates that civilian groups in the Peninsula are putting strong pressure on both the government and Tamil rebels to begin peace talks and to remove the blockade (Ibid.).
