Information on whether, under the new government, an amnesty has been declared for Jatiya Party members convicted or accused of criminal activities is currently unavailable to the DIRB. For information on the relationship between the Jatiya Party and the ruling Awami League since the June 1996 elections, however, please see Response to Information Request BGD24973.E of 23 September 1996.

According to a representative of the Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa, in Bangladesh, "change of governments do not affect the legal validity of an arrest warrant issued by the court. However, an arrest warrant may become inoperative only if a court of higher authority declares it to be null and void" (1 Oct. 1996).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
