A representative of Middle East Watch in Washington, DC, is not aware of any specific problem for Christians in the safe haven area (16 Oct. 1996a). Another Middle East Watch representative added that Christians have been given a few seats in the Kurdish parliament that has been set up in the safe haven (16 Oct. 1996b).

Describing the situation in Iraqi Kurdistan following the recent capture of Arbil by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) forces, the attached Middle East International article refers to the presence of political parties, including Assyrian parties, in the safe haven, and the membership of Assyrians in the new Kurdish regional cabinet (4 Oct. 1996, 15).
