According to a representative of the Embassy of El Salvador in Ottawa, women are subject to compulsory military service but do not carry out such service in combat positions (25 Mar. 1994).
For information on El Salvador's military service law, which came into force in August 1992, please refer to the DIRB Question and Answer report entitled El Salvador: Chronology of Events, January 1992-August 1993, as well as the attached documents.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
