The information contained in this response was provided by Makau wa Mutua, president of the Kenya Human Rights Organisation and head of a human rights program at Harvard University in Boston, during a telephone interview with the DIRB (30 Mar. 1993). He explained that the Kenya Patriotic Front is a clandestine organization formed in Norway in the late 1980s by former member of parliament Koigi wa Wamwere. Koigi wa Wamwere was arrested in Uganda in October 1990 and was charged with treason in Kenya. This information is corroborated by a 23 April 1991 report from Reuters. Makau wa Mutua added that the KPF does not have a large following as the legalization of political parties by President Moi pre-empted the activities of such secret movements. He also stated that Koigi wa Wamwere was recently released from detention and has now returned to Denmark.
