Information on whether Emperor Haile Selassie once went by the name of Prince of Makonnen could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB. However, according to The New Encyclopaedia Britannica, the original name of Emperor Haile Selassie was Tafari Makonnen (1989, 620). The same source states that Tafari Makonnen also carried the title of Lij, which is "given to children of the Amhara nobility." For additional information on Haile Selassie's background, please refer to the second attachment. Ethiopia: A Country Study, corroborates the information provided above on Haile Selassie's original name (1993, 33-36).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
