According to AFP, former prime minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed, who had been suffering from high blood pressure, was freed from the prison cell of a hospital in December 1991 after the Bangaldeshi High Court granted him bail (6 Dec. 1991). According to the source, the bail would be withdrawn if the former prime minister "was in any way found interfering or influencing with investigations into graft charges against him" (ibid.).

Sources currently available to the DIRB do not provide information on the area the former prime minister comes from, his medical trip abroad and his re-arrest since December 1991.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
