According to a representative of Programa Venezolano de Educacion-Accion en Derechos Humanos (PROVEA), the group Hombre Nuevo was involved in community work at least in the 23 January Parish (Parroquia 23 de Enero) (4 Mar. 1994). The representative indicated that the group was among the many groups that were subject to repression in the aftermath of the February 1989 unrest (ibid.). He also stated that some of the members of the group were detained and some members' houses were searched by security forces (ibid.). The representative could not provide further information on the current status of the group, although he mentioned that the group has not been heard of recently and may have "died of natural causes," meaning that it apparently lost momentum and eventually dissolved on its own (ibid.).
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
