For information on the status of a male foreigner married to a Turkish woman, please consult the attached documents.
The following information was provided during a 17 March 1997 telephone interview with a representative of the Embassy of Turkey in Ottawa.
The source stated that Turkey recognizes the principle of non-refoulement when there is a well-founded fear of persecution in one's country of origin. The source added that a large number of Iranians are residing in Turkey as temporary refugees and awaiting permission to relocate to a third country. The source indicated that Turkey would examine any refugee claims and base its decision on the evidence provided in support of each claim.
The Iranian male married to a Turkish woman can apply for residence in Turkey or the Embassy of Turkey in Ottawa, which would send the file to the Ministry of the Interior in Ankara for a decision.
