On February 18, government authorities suspended the operations of the private radio station Radio Comercial, partly owned by a member of the political opposition, reversing press freedom gains in a country that has made a strong transition to multiparty democracy. Authorities said the frequency given to the station in 1997 was only provisional. But no similar action was taken against other broadcasters with provisional frequencies, suggesting strongly that the suspension was political. Self-censorship persists among state journalists, who fear demotion or outright dismissal for any perceived critical coverage of President Antonio Mascarenhas Monteiro and his Movement for Democracy party.
