According to an Iraqi radio broadcast, Iraq launched two Scud missiles against Riyadh on 24 February 1991 (Domestic Service 25 Feb. 1991). Voice of Palestine reports the destruction of the Saudi Ministry of Defence building in Riyadh on 24 February because of an Iraqi missile attack (24 Feb. 1991). A Saudi television broadcast refers to the interception and destruction of an Iraqi missile heading towards Riyadh on the same day (24 Feb. 1991). Also that same day "some damage" was reported when a school was hit with missile debris, presumably from the missile referred to in the Saudi television broadcast (SPA 24 Feb. 1991).

On 25 January the debris of a destroyed Iraqi missile launched toward Riyadh killed one person and injured 30 others (Domestic Service 26 Jan. 1991). Also on 25 January a Saudi radio program reports on the destruction of one of the two Iraqi missiles aimed at Riyadh, presumably on the same day; the debris from this missile killed one person and injured 13 others (Domestic Service 25 Jan. 1991). It is not clear whether this report refers to the same 25 January missile attack.

Another Iraqi missile fired toward Riyadh was destroyed on 26 January (Saudi Arabian Television 27 Jan. 1991). According to a Saudi television broadcast, four Iraqi missiles launched toward Riyadh were destroyed on 21 January (21 Jan. 1991). Agence France Presse refers to an unconfirmed report of a 17 January Iraqi missile attack on Riyadh (17 Jan. 1991).

The attached Keesing's Record of World Events contains a table of Iraqi missile attacks on Riyadh in January 1991.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
