New information on a journalist killed before 2002

The High Court on 22 March 2002 quashed the conviction of drug dealer Paul Ward for murdering Veronica Guerin, crime reporter of The Sunday Independent newspaper, saying too much weight had been given to uncorroborated evidence at his 1998 trial. Ward was not freed however, as he is also serving a 12-year sentence for taking part in a prison riot.

Two men on a motorbike shot and killed Guerin in her car while stopped at a traffic light in Dublin on 26 June 1996. She had specialised in reporting on organised crime and drug trafficking and had been physically attacked three times and threatened. Ward was charged on 31 October 1996 with killing her.
