Comments:
This report covers the visit paid by the Special Rapporteur to Algeria from
16 to 26 September 2002. It discusses the legal and political setting for freedom of religion
or belief and the situation as regards faith and the expression of faith. It highlights the partisan
political use of Islam as a tool and the violence generated by religious extremism, the status of
women, dialogue between and within religions and the role played by schools in spreading
tolerance and non-discrimination. The conclusions and recommendations are concerned with
both the management and the prevention of intolerance and discrimination based on religion or
belief.
