"False information" and slander are prohibited, though both seldom appear in the news and information media. The government owns the principal newspaper La Nation as well as the television and radio stations. Independent weeklies are allowed to circulate freely but journalists exercise self-censorship. The state-run media do not criticize the government. The independent newspaper Le Renouveau was suspended from publishing and the editor was arrested and charged with distributing false information. He faced two years in prison. The publishing director of another paper was also arrested and placed in detention for criticizing the government.
