Márquez, director of the magazine El Marqués, which is known for its critical reporting on corruption, was killed in a drive-by shooting by two gunmen on a motorcycle as he was entering his car on a downtown street in the town of Armenia in western Colombia. Márquez had received numerous death threats in the previous two years because of his crusade against corruption in the region.
