A feminist and a lawyer specializing in family law in
Santiago (2 Dec. 1993) and a representative of the Centro de Investigación para la Acción Femenina (CIPAF) in Santo Domingo (2 Dec. 1993) both stated that there are no shelters for battered women and no rape crisis centres for women victims of sexual abuse. The lawyer stated that there are three non-governmental organizations providing assistance exclusively to women victims of domestic violence and sexual assault (10 Dec. 1993). All three are located in Santo Domingo: the Centro de Servicios Legales para la Mujer provides legal services, the Centro de Apoyo Aquelarre provides psychological support, and the Colectivo Mujer y Salud provides medical and psychological assistance (12 Dec. 1993).
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
