A representative of the Arab League in Ottawa offered the following information during a telephone interview on 17 January 1992.
The Iraqi government expelled many Iraqis of Iranian descent to Iran after 1979 for fear of their presence in Iraq. The representative states that, by and large, Iraqis of Iranian origin in Iraq, who are Shias, are ill-treated and denied sensitive government positions because they are suspected of being Iranian sympathizers.
According to the Arab League source, since the original Iraqi fear of Iraqis of Iranian descent has increased because of the 1991 Shiite-uprising in southern Iraq, these people cannot return to Iraq; the Iraqi authorities would not issue them entry visas to Iraq. However, if they somehow entered Iraq, they would face punishments including the death penalty.
Attached please find copies of Responses to Information Request Nos. IRQ1565, IRQ3434, IRQ4240, IRQ4007 and IRQ4817 and their attachments on the status of Iraqis of Iranian descent in Iraq.
