"He acknowledges the role and contribution of national stakeholders, including electoral authorities, security forces, civil society and political parties in upholding Senegal's long-standing democratic tradition," his spokesperson said in a statement issued last night.
Although there was concern as voters went to the polls last Sunday given the violence that had marred the campaign, media reports say the election took place in relative peace. Incumbent Abdoulaye Wade is now set to face former prime minister Macky Sall in a run-off vote.
"As the country prepares for a second round of voting to determine its future leadership, the Secretary-General appeals, once again, for the same spirit of civic responsibility and democratic commitment to prevail throughout the process," said last night's statement.
It added that the UN will continue to support national efforts towards a peaceful, credible and transparent conclusion of the presidential election in Senegal.<
