No mention of the Manga Gardens (Jardines de Manga) organization could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. According to a public relations representative of the Zone 10 Community Centre (Centro Comunal de la Zona 10) in Montevideo, Jardines de Manga is a neighbourhood in zone 10 and there is no group that bears this name (17 Dec. 2003). However, the representative indicated that there is a soup kitchen (merendero), located in Jardines de Manga and supported by the city of Montevideo, that offers meals to street children (Centro Comunal de la Zona 10 17 Dec. 2003). He was not aware of any threats made against the soup kitchen's staff (ibid.).

During a telephone interview with the Research Directorate, a representative of Gurises Unidos, a non-governmental organization established in Montevideo in 1989 to help children and adolescents living on the streets (Gurises Unidos n.d.), indicated that he did not know of any group called Manga Gardens (ibid. 17 Dec. 2003). Moreover, the representative, who heads an assistance project for street children from the Jardines de Manga neighbourhood, indicated that the people working with street children in this zone had not received any threats (ibid.).

No information on whether the police conspired with members of organized crime to pressure youths into drug use and prostitution could be found among the sources consulted. The Gurises Unidos representative never received any information on this subject in his work with street children (17 Dec. 2003).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
