On 11 February 2000 an official at the Embassy of the Republic of Hungary in Ottawa stated, in reply to the question whether Hungarian law forbids the contracting of a marriage on Hungarian soil between a Hungarian citizen and a foreigner if the foreigner is not a permanent resident of Hungary, that "it is not forbidden to marry a foreigner."
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
