Ukrainian media reports say a man was killed when a grenade he was carrying detonated at a local university in the western city of Chernivtsi.
Two others – a professor and a student – were injured in the blast and taken to hospital.
State prosecutors said they were investigating whether the detonation was accidental or intentional.
There have been conflicting media reports about the man's intentions.
Some local reports said the man, who has not been identified, set the grenade off on purpose to commit suicide.
The "Segodnya" daily said he previously had arguments with university staff about his rights to a plot of land. Other reports said he was a former border guard who had recently been in arguments with one of the university's professors.
