No one has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks, which took place yesterday in the town of Garissa near Kenya's border with Somalia.
"These attacks, which deliberately targeted places of worship, are reprehensible and criminal," said a statement issued by Mr. Ban's spokesperson.
"No cause can justify the indiscriminate targeting of civilians. The perpetrators of these attacks, and of other recent terrorist acts in Kenya, must be held to account," it added.
The Secretary-General extended his condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Kenya.
