BAKU – Police in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, have broken up an unsanctioned opposition protest and arrested the co-chairman and several other activists of the opposition Republican Alternative (REAL) alliance.
Co-Chairman Ilgar Mammadov and the activists were detained on June 12 as they moved toward the parliament building, where the group planned to hold a demonstration protesting amendments to laws that limit public access to information regarding government financial and economic programs.
Opposition activists say the amendments will make the government's financial and economic activities less transparent.
